Recording Arts
Master the technology that makes the music

Students at the Console, 8th Floor StudiosIf you're looking for a degree in recording arts, you have a handful of options. Want more than a technical school can offer?

Whether you pursue the Bachelor of Science in Music or the Master of Science in Recording Arts, you'll find that University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center (UCDHSC), Downtown Denver Campus offers some of the best programs in the nation. After all, we've been doing this for more than 25 years, and our faculty are internationally renowned experts.

The undergraduate recording arts curriculum at UCDHSC's College of Arts & Media combines a comprehensive general education with career-conscious courses, giving you the breadth and depth you need to succeed in this ever-changing industry. Courses in communications, humanities, math, social/behavioral and natural/physical sciences, and multiculturalism establish a foundation on which more specialized courses build. You'll study the latest analog and digital technologies as they're used in studio recording, sound reinforcement, and electronic music, and you'll master the artistic applications of those technologies to recording, composition, and performance.

Professor Rich Sanders talks with students of the Audio Forensics, MUS 6530 classBuilding on our history of success, our new Master of Science Degree in Recording Arts is one of only a few such programs in the country, and the only one with a pedagogy track to prepare future educators.

The city of Denver provides some unique internship and employment opportunities, both while you're enrolled and after graduation. With easy access from either coast, we're able to bring an impressive list of visiting artists and guest lecturers to campus each year -- experts in production engineering, live recording techniques, historical and new developments in professional audio synthesis.

The success of our graduates proves the long-term value of a CU degree in recording arts. One recent graduate works at Lucas Films and won an Academy Award® for dialogue editing on "Titanic." Another worked in Nashville and won a Grammy for his work on Chet Atkins' most recent recording. Yet another has worked with Phil Collins in creating multi-language recordings of Disney's "Tarzan." UCDHSC's Recording Arts Program can be a springboard to success, giving our students access to some of the biggest names in the industry.

The B.S. in Music with an emphasis in Music Industry Studies does not require an audition, and it trades the second year of music theory and history for studies in music business, film/TV production, multimedia, electrical engineering, or computer science. This program is described as a music industry studies major with a music minor.

Please note:  The College of Arts & Media will not be admitting any new or transfer MEIS majors for the Spring 2007 or Summer 2007 semesters. Students may apply for consideration of admission to the fall 2007 cohort only. In addition, beginning with Fall 2007 admissions, acceptance into the CU-Denver Music Department will be on a competitive basis, with specific entrance evaluation requirements, as follows.  Admission to the Music major is competitive for both freshmen and transfer students.

All applicants will be placed in an "Enrollment Pool" and admission decisions will be based upon an indexed composite score of GPA, Music Aptitude Exam scores and Audition, (if applicable).

CAM Undecided Status:  Students attending CAM as "Undecided" or any major other than Music are restricted from taking any music courses applicable to the music major until they have formally applied for and been accepted to the MEIS Program as Music majors.

The College of Arts and Media makes no assurances of admission to the Music Degree for any "undecided" or any major other than Music.  Further, the college does not give preferential treatment to any student or major in application to the Music Department.
