College Teaching 101: A Workshop on College Teaching for New and Prospective Faculty

During this workshop, participants will create an action plan for an up-coming (or dream) teaching assignment, and construct course components (such as sections of a syllabus, assessment tool, and so on). CU Online recently procured an institutional site license for a software application known as Respondus. Respondus is a powerful tool for creating and managing exams or quizzes. In this workshop you will learn the features of Respondus and how to acquire and use this tool to create and manage tests for your Blackboard course. Respondus contains an easy to use Exam Wizard for creating an assessment in minutes. Exams can be created offline in Respondus using a Windows environment. Tests can be printed to paper or published directly to Blackboard. Attend this workshop to find out more of the many benefits of using Respondus and get your copy for use in your online courses

Keeping It Honest. A new set of tools included in Blackboard allow all faculty, both online and in the classroom, to easily check student writing for instances of plagiarism. This seminar covers how to implement Safe Assign in your classes, as well as providing recommendations and a framework for encouraging academic honesty with your students.
Structuring Successful Discussions

The purpose of this one-hour workshop is to help you design, facilitate, and manage effective discussions to encourage rich and relevant learning. The guidelines shared and illustrated during the workshop – such as how to set the tone for social sharing and community, launching and structuring discussions, engaging quieter students, and so on – do not work in isolation, but work systemically together to create an effective learning experience. This workshop is appropriate if you are dissatisfied with the level and quality of students’ participation during class discussions, and are interested in exploring different ways to generate thoughtful discussions in your courses.

Effective Teamwork Strategies

One instructional approach that can be very effective in preparing students for their professional lives is the use of group projects, involving learners in collaboration, teamwork, peer review, and so forth. This approach not only helps instructors manage their workload because instead of evaluating 25 individual learner projects they may only evaluate five group projects, it can also lead to powerful learning experiences for students. The purpose of this one-hour workshop is to explore the use of specific strategies for managing and assessing group projects and teamwork.

This hands-on workshop will give you the tools and strategies you need to develop a successful online course. The workshop is divided into sessions that cover the critical aspects of developing and teaching an eCollege online course, such as; Elements of a successful online course, Day to day details you should know, Designing online syllabi and announcements, Assessing students, Crafting student discussions, and Assessing your course. During each session you’ll see some instructional best practices and apply these practices by adding new material to your own course. You will be given your own eCollege course shell to practice with, but you can also use a course you’re already developing. If you are new to online instruction, you should take the entire workshop. If you are an experienced online instructor, you can attend only the specific modules that interest you.
