New! Message from Janet Lopez, Director of the P-20 Education Initiatives

Over the past 6 months I have had the opportunity to meet with a wide range of faculty and staff across the UC Denver campus and to learn about the many exciting programs, research and education-related initiatives occurring on campus.

As I learn about the various work occurring on campus (as well as in larger statewide education community), I am sending out periodic email updates on an internal and external P-20 education distribution list.If you would like to be added to the internal list please email me.  If you have any items you would like shared on this distribution list please let me know. I will send out bi-monthly updates to both the internal and external list.  The external list is shared with over 300 members of the outside education community (foundations, researchers, practitioners, non-profits, policymakers, legislatures, etc.).

New! P-20 Speaker Series

The Office of P-20 Education Initiatives will be sponsoring and co-hosting a P-20 Speaker Series in the Fall of 2009 and Spring 2010.  The theme for the monthly speaker series is P-20 Education: Equity of Opportunity in P-12 Education and Equity of Outcomes in Higher Education.  If faculty or staff have suggestions for possible local or national speakers who can address issues inside this year’s theme, please send suggestions to Janet Lopez.

Four Corners Conference on Immigration: Call for Papers

Topic:  Bridging the Gap between Theory and Practice – a Dialogue on Immigration

Mesa State College
Grand Junction, CO
9 October – 10 October 2009
www.mesastate.edu/spanish/fcc

Abstract deadline: 20-July-2009.

On October 9-10, 2009 Mesa State College will host a conference on immigration issues that seeks to bridge the gap between academic scholarship and the experience of immigration in the field.  Papers or panels that explore the interaction between scholarship and action on immigration issues are most welcome.  How do theory and practice relate to each other in social services, national security, criminal justice, identity, art, literature, language or culture?  This conference is intended to be multi-disciplinary. Scholars and practitioners in the humanities, social sciences, human services, business and criminal justice are encouraged to submit proposals.  The goal of the conference is to:
- to offer a venue for the convergence of theory and practice as related to immigration
- to explore multiple approaches to issues surrounding immigration
- to provide opportunities for multi-disciplinary exchange
- to promote understanding, encourage thought and further scholarship related to issues of immigration.

Conference organizers also invite proposals for complete panels or roundtables related to immigration.

China Travel Study Class

Professor Sonja Foss and Associate Professor Barb Walkosz of the Department of Communication recently led a group of 10 students to China for a travel study course called "Narratives of the New China: Engagement and Exploration." The purpose of the course was to provide students with first-hand experience analyzing the narratives used by China to construct and transform its identity with the 2008 Summer Olympics. Among the sites visited were Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Temple of heaven, the Hong Qian market, the Summer palace and Yuanmingyuan Garden, two Olympic Buildings (the Bird's Nest and the Water Cube), the Great Wall, and the 798 Factory District.  Each of the sites was analyzed by the students for the narrative being constructed by the site about China. The group partnered with the staff of UCD's International College at Beijing to make arrangements for the excursions and lodging for the class. The students loved China and developed all sorts of skills--eating with chopsticks, eating collaboratively, getting around Beijing on the subway, using nonverbal communication eloquently, and bargaining effectively with humor and respect.

Associate Professor and Chair Stephen Hartnett of the Communication Department teaches a writing class at the Denver Women's Prison. From that class, a literary magazine called Captured Words Free Thoughts is published. The most recent volume was just printed.

The formal announcement of Stephen G. Medema, professor of economics, being named the new director of the University Honors and Leadership program by the Office of Undergraduate Experiences was in the Denver Post's People on the Move section on June 25.

Associate Professor Daniel Rees from the Economics Department and American University professor Joseph Sabia had a study published on June 12 in the Journal of Human Capital on how breastfeeding leads to better academic achievement in high school and an increased likelihood of attending college.
