Catherine B. Kunst, Ph.D.

Dr. Kunst is a cofounder of Beacon Biotechnology, a Colorado company which is developing novel microarray based diagnostic devices.

Prior to joining the Bard Center, Dr. Kunst served as the Interim Director of the Eleanor Roosevelt Institute at the University of Denver, an organization focused on basic biomedical research. Her research focused on preventing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease), a fatal disease characterized by progressive paralysis. Dr. Kunst discovered that certain genetic variations can prevent ALS in genetically engineered mice otherwise destined to die from the disease. Her federally funded research laboratory is working to identify the protective genes and what they do in the hope that this discovery will lead to treatments for ALS in people.

Dr. Kunst earned her BS in Biochemistry from Case Western Reserve University and her PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Emory University. She recently completed her MBA at the University of Colorado Denver with an emphasis in entrepreneurship.
