Strategic Planning for Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurs need the capacity to imagine the future and, having imagined it, to create it.  Gaining an understanding of how to accomplish this task is the central mission of a new course at the Bard Center – ENTP 6856 Strategic Planning for Entrepreneurs.

The course will explain tools and frameworks to create, implement and update a strategic plan to shape the future and guide an entrepreneurial organization on its path to success.  It begins with an analysis of the forces shaping the market opportunity for the firm and its competitors.

Students will learn how to develop a mission statement and an exciting vision of the future for their organizations.  They will learn how to create a detailed operating plan that differentiates a business from its competitors in a way that is profitable and sustainable.  They will be able to succinctly articulate their customer value proposition.

Put these lessons together and you will have the ability create a sense of direction, a sense of discovery, and a sense of destiny for your enterprise.

Design and Manage Entrepreneurial Organizations

This popular online course is about creating and running an organization that will sustain high performance over a long period of time and will become a premier institution in its field. The key premise is that the essence of greatness doesn’t lie in cost cutting, restructuring, or in the pure profit motive. Instead, it lies in people's dedication to building companies around a sense of purpose -- around core values that infuse work with the kind of meaning that goes beyond just making money. Ironically, these purpose-driven companies also happen to perform very well financially.

The course systematically distills the lessons from entrepreneurial organizations like Google or eBay or established companies like Procter & Gamble that now seem like giants but are just a previous generation of entrepreneurial companies. It will help you turn your organization into an innovation machine that will last through the ages. You’ll learn about different organizational cultures and how to simultaneously preserve core values while driving change and stimulating progress.  You’ll observe the value of rapid experimentation and trial and error.

You will learn how to build an organization for the ages.
