Bertolt Brecht’s 1940’s play, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, is a story of the perilous consequences of a common act of kindness in a world shattered by the chaos of civil war. As Brecht weaves a tapestry of ancient folk tales into the story of a servant girl’s struggle for survival in war torn Russian Georgia, he maps the devastating anatomy of wartime and creates a timeless condemnation of the cowardice of those in power and a celebration of the triumph of the common man.
The Caucasian Chalk Circle juxtaposes images of the ravages of war and those who seek refuge from it with flashes of vaudeville-like escapades of those who seek to profit by it. UC Denver’s Department of Theater, Film and Video Production will blend the resources of cinematic and theatrical tradition into a multimedia presentation including songs and live music in an environment enhanced by surround sound and special effects.
