The University of Colorado Denver (UCD) places a priority on the safety and security of its faculty, staff, students and visitors at all campuses. We strive to provide the safest possible environment at all of our locations – downtown, Ninth and Colorado and at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora.
At our downtown location on the Auraria Campus, we work in cooperation with the Auraria Campus Police Department. The officers of the Auraria Police Department are trained to handle emergencies. They also have a plan to ensure the safety and security of the students and staff, as well as the campus property.
- While emergency response procedures are in place, the Auraria Police Department routinely reviews procedures to ensure the processes adequately address the changing nature of potential threats.
- Safety alerts and general information to support awareness are made available to the campus community on a regular and timely basis.
- UCD has an emergency preparedness, response and recovery plan in place. A multidisciplinary Safety and Security Committee meets monthly to address security concerns and protocols. This committee oversees the efforts of its several subcommittees, which are charged with planning for and conducting emergency response including communication and continuity of operations.
- UCD has a Workplace Violence policy in place. University employees, students, affiliates, and visitors who engage in prohibited behavior are held accountable under University policy and local, state, and federal law. Any employee or student who commits or threatens to commit prohibited behavior may be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal or expulsion, as well as arrest and prosecution. Any visitor or affiliate who commits or threatens to commit prohibited behavior may be subject to exclusion from campus, arrest, prosecution, termination of his or her business relationship with the University, and/or any other appropriate action.
- UCD has a Fire and Life Safety Office that oversees life safety code concerns in University-owned facilities during design review of projects, responds to all fire alarms and activated smoke detectors in occupied buildings, and works to facilitate compliance with fire and life safety concerns through regular and frequent on-site inspections.
- UCD has an Environmental Health and Safety Office that oversees the use, transportation, storage and disposal of biological, chemical and radiological materials and conducts annual training of all researchers to assure chemical handling rules are followed in University-owned facilities.
