Campus Activities

As a resource for students, staff and faculty of the Auraria Campus, we offer many different activities to increase their knowledge of chemistry as well as creating a stronger student body. There are many activities we provide for our campus:

  • Notebooks: FOR SALE! 50 pages, carbon copy, periodic table, ONLY $13!
  • Study Groups for various classes
    • The chem club believes that to be successful in chemistry, or any of the sciences, students must practice problem solving. Study groups increase problem solving skills as well as G.P.A. UCD Chem Club organizes a schedule of study groups where even the most shy student can meet people to ask questions, verify methods and check answers against otherst. The sessions are an excellent environment to review notes, solidify concepts, work on homework or study for upcoming tests. They allow students to think of concepts in a new way and learn them better by explaining them to other students. Nothing is better for testing your knowledge than explaining or teaching it to somebody else. The Chem Club provides study groups for any subject requested by current members. We are not limited to chemistry courses, and broaden our studies to all subjects that are essential to chemistry including biology, physics, math and psychology. We include any level course from freshman to seniors upon request.
  • ACS Study Guides: FOR SALE! Organic Chemistry - $18 and General Chemistry - $15
  • Help Sessions
  • Demonstrations
    • UCD chem club is interested in assisting students of all ages. the basic scientific principals are great refreshers for college students enhance learning through visual stimuli and hands on stimuli make campus demonstrations include in depth activites incorporate discussion of relevant topics into demonstrations A sample topic would be gasoline additives that increase fuel cost. The additive gasoline a liquid (important to the motor vehicle) and reduces the amount of vapors (which is harmful to human health and the environment). Science is essential for adults to understand the world around them and we hope to help young adults make sense of our science based society.

  • National Conferences
    • This is an exciting opportunity for any chem club member. In the past, we have only allowed two club members to attend and last year, 10 members were able to make the conference held in San Diego, March 14th through 17th. Every year the conference allows all student affiliates of ACS to get together and discuss what they have been doing on their campuses. It is a great way to generate new ideas for our club, and celebrate our success! There are many interesting seminars and speakers. It's a great week to learn about what is new and current in the world of chemistry. It's educational, fun and a great time with your chem club members!

  • Seminars and Speakers
    • We are currently working with other departments to present a seminar series called "The Last Lecture Series". This seminar series allows professors of various fields to present their research or a topic that they truly enjoy to fellow professors and students. This is to better aid and increase the knowledge of other students whom are otherwise immersed solely in their field of study.

  • Poster Sessions
  • Green Chemistry Experiments
  • Fundraisers
    • Our club is funded by donations and fundraising. We use our funds to buy chemicals for demonstrations, food for study groups, travel and expenses for the ACS conference, materials for on campus education activities (earth day packet, national chemistry week), speakers and scholarships for students (in the future). Currently we are working on a grant proposal that we can send out to organizations we think would be interested in making donations (hospitals, pharmacutical companies....any ideas?). We also sell ACS exam books for those taking the ACS standardized General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry finals. We also plan other activites during the semester such as bake sales (picture below).

  • PB&J DAY: In February, the chemistry club is going to get together and make sack lunches with sandwiches, fruit, and water and pass them out to the many homeless people surrounding our campus.

  • "Fun" Events

Photos below show pillow fights and ping pong at our summer barbeque:

  • Recycling Campaign:Each Earth Day, we challenge EVERYONE on Auraria campus to recycle for ONE MONTH. After one month, email us and report how many garbage bags of glass, tin, alumnimun, plastic and paper you recycled!
  • Recruiting Events for the University

Greener Experiments

We are currently working on converting some of the laboratory experiments of our Chemistry Department into greener labs. Listed are the lab experiments that we are trying to convert and the two labs we have converted:

  • Epoxidation (oxone "green" vs MCPBA) - successfully converted

  • Electrophilic Substitution
  • a
  • Limonene Extraction (Liquid CO2 "green" vs methylene chloride or  something similar) - successfully converted

  • Aldol Condensation: synthesis of Chalcones (solventless)

  • Wittig Reaction (solventless) - results are being assessed currently
