Academic Standing

Students who maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA are considered in good standing with the College. Students who fail to maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA are subject to the academic policies of probation, suspension, or dismissal. A student must be in good standing to graduate with a baccalaureate degree from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Students on probation or suspension are required to meet with their CLAS advisor prior to registration as detailed below.

Probation

Academic probation is a warning to students that the minimum 2.0 GPA level of academic performance is not being maintained. Students placed on Probation for the first time will be required to complete an academic success packet. This packet is designed to help improve access to student services, enhance study skills, outline career counseling, and proved details of the CLAS probation and suspension policies. Probation students will work with their academic advisor on how to return to good standing as soon as possible.

There is no restriction on the amount of time a student can remain on Probation. Students on probation do not have restrictions on course selection or credit hours; however, a restricted schedule to concentrate on grades is strongly encouraged. Students on probation should work with their academic advisor to make appropriate course selections that will enable them to return to Good Standing.

Probation status is not placed on the official University of Colorado transcript. Probation students are returned to good standing only after their cumulative GPA returns to a minimum 2.0.

Students on probation must earn a minimum 2.3 semester GPA to remain on Academic Probation. If your semester's GPA is below 2.3, you will be placed on Academic Suspension.

Suspension

Suspension is an official notification that a student has not maintained the required minimum grade performance and has failed to meet the required conditions for continued Probation. Severe registration restrictions exist for students on suspension that will interfere with graduation, financial aid, foreign student visas, and course work outside CLAS.

A student's suspension status is permanently recorded on the official University of Colorado transcript. Suspension students are returned to good standing only when their cumulative GPA reaches a minimum 2.0.

Students who fail to meet the academic conditions of probation are placed on suspension. You will remain on suspension until you return to good standing (minimum 2.0 GPA) or fall below the GPA requirements for a student on suspension. At that time, you will face dismissal.

Students on suspension are required to register manually, using a Schedule Adjustment Form. Suspension status will limit you to a maximum of 2 on-campus courses in CLAS or UC Denver core. Courses outside the College or pooled classes will not be permitted. Suspension students will not be able to take on-line courses, extended studies, or correspondence classes. Suspension students are also ineligible for independent study and internship credits.

Manual registration must be approved before the first day of classes each term. NO EXCEPTIONS!

While on suspension, students must achieve a 2.3 minimum GPA each semester until returning to good standing, 2.0 cumulative GPA. Failure to satisfy this requirement for continued suspension will result in Academic Dismissal.

Dismissal

Students on suspension who do not maintain a 2.3 semester GPA will be dismissed from the University of Colorado. Students on Academic Dismissal will not be allowed to take classes anywhere in the University of Colorado system, including summer term.

Readmission

Probation and suspension students in CLAS may petition for readmission if UC Denver course work is interrupted for 12 or more consecutive months. Readmission includes an application with the Office of Admissions, NC1005, 303-556-2704. Suspension students must petition CLAS for readmission by contacting the CLAS advising offices, NC 2024, 303-556-2555.

Successfully readmitted students will be placed on Probation or Suspension, as appropriate, and are subject to the conditions above.

Students on Academic Dismissal will be considered for readmission upon demonstrated success at the university level. Please contact your CLAS advisor for more information.

Notification of Academic Standing

Letters of notice are sent to your mailing address as listed on SMART at the beginning of the semester after you earned Probation, Suspension, Dismissal or Good Standing. It is imperative that you maintain a correct mailing address with the University. Failure to receive this letter does not exempt you from meeting the requirements of your status.

Once placed on probation, you will be required to meet with your CLAS advisor every semester prior to registration for the next term. During your first term on Academic Probation, you will be required to complete an Academic Success Packet.

Students placed on suspension will be dis-enrolled from the classes for which they registered for the next semester. For example, a student who earns suspension at the end of Spring 2006 will be dis-enrolled for both Summer and Fall 2006. Please see your Academic Advisor as soon as possible to facilitate approved registration for Summer semester.

You will also receive a letter from the Academic Advising Center when you return to Good Standing. Again, please make sure your mailing address is kept up-to-date.

Academic Success Packet

The Academic Success Packet (AS packet) has been designed to help students in academic difficulty return to and stay in good standing with the University. All CLAS students placed on Academic Probation are required to complete an academic success packet prior to registration. CLAS students who are currently undeclared, pre-business, pre-engineering, etc. will meet with a CLAS advisor and their ASAC advisor. Even if you are regularly seeing an advisor in the Academic Success and Advising Center, you will be required to see a CLAS advisor to complete this packet.
