CU Grading Policies
University of Colorado Grading System
Letter Grades: 4.0 absolute scale
| A | 4.0 (points per credit hour) | No A+ grade allowed |
| B | 3.0 |
|
| C | 2.0 | minimum for proficiency grade |
| D | 1.0 | D-, minimum passing grade |
| F | 0.0 | Failing, no credit, no F+ or F- grades |
Plus/Minus Grades (faculty option)
+ grade, add 0.3 points. If you earn a B+, it is worth 3.3 points per credit hour
- grade, subtract 0.3 points. If you earn a C-, it is worth 1.7 points per credit hour
Optional Grades
Incompletes (IW or IF)
- Given by faculty discretion when there are special circumstances that preclude course completion
- Only a small portion of the course remains: 75% of the work in the course must be completed
- Up to 12 months to complete the unfinished portion of the course
- After 12 months, IF will become an F
- After 12 months, IW will become a W
Pass/Fail
- Core knowledge areas and electives are the only courses that can be taken pass/fail
- No Core Skills courses or major/minor courses
- D- or better is translated by the Records office into a P (pass) grade.
- P grades do not affect your GPA
No Credit
- This will appear on your official transcript and audit as non-credit course
Repeated Courses
- Credit is only given once.
- Both grades will appear on the transcript
- Both grades will be configured into the cumulative GPA
- no course forgiveness policy at UCD
Cumulative Grade Point Average
The cumulative grade point average is a numeric average of the letter grades received in CU courses.

GPA = total grade points ÷ total graded credits attempted.
