Academic Advising is a Shared Partnership!

Academic Advisor Responsibilities (College Professional)

  • Explain college core curriculum and graduation requirement.
  • Review transfer credits as it relates to “Core” curriculum.
  • Assist student with learning more about his/her major and its career opportunities.
  • Introduce students to campus resources that will help students make decisions and feel connected with the University.
  • Help students establish an academic plan and career goals as well as support students in accomplishing goals.
  • Help students review and evaluate progress toward a degree.
  • Explain academic policies and procedures.
  • Approve all designated educational transactions. (i.e. scheduling, major changes, withdrawal from the university, etc.)
  • Assist students in getting connected with his/her chosen academic department.
  • Facilitate the graduation check process.
  • Help students ask the right questions.

Student Responsibilities

  • Visit assigned advisor at least twice during each semester, more often if needed.
  • Be prepared for each advising session.
  • Follow through on actions identified during each advising session.
  • Clarify and update advisor on personal values, abilities, interests and goals.
  • Utilize campus resources as tools to help student answer general questions about careers and possible majors.
  • Become knowledgeable about all graduation requirements and adhere to institutional policies, procedures, and deadlines.
  • Work with advisor to create a plan the leads to GRADUATION.
  • Set goals with advisor and talk about what he/she needs to do to achieve them.
  • Attend the academic department activities and other related opportunities to further your understanding of academic programs and career opportunities in chosen field. (Examples: Career Expo.)

Faculty Advisor Responsibilities

  • Explain academic major requirements.
  • Approve transfer credits as it relates to academic major.
  • Check student’s progress toward a degree in major.
  • Assist student with learning more about his/her major and its career opportunities.
  • Guide students in completing academic plan and career goals.
  • Verify students’ completion of major/minor requirements.
