Your Graduate Advisors
Faculty Advisors
Many students will tell you that the most important person in their graduate experience was their faculty advisor. That's because a faculty advisor is likely to do much more than recommend courses to fulfill program requirements. Your advisor can also help you make it through a thesis, project and/or comprehensive examination if required in your degree. It is also common for graduate students to work with their faculty advisor on original research projects.
Once you are admitted into a graduate program, you may want to contact the graduate faculty coordinator -- you should find that person's name on the department's web site. That individual will either act as your advisor, or help pair you with someone from the department's faculty.
While students are strongly encouraged to meet with their faculty advisor every semester, they must meet with their faculty advisor and/or faculty coordinator at the beginning of their last semester to verify that all degree requirements have been met and to have their candidacy form approved and signed.
CLAS Graduate Coordinator
As graduate students approach completion of their degree, a host of forms and processes must be cleared and approved at the college level. Students are invited to contact the CLAS Graduate Coordinator regarding policies that dictate central oversight.
