Course Registration Basics

First-Time Registration For new Freshmen

New first-year students are required to meet first with their advisor before they register for class. New student orientation includes a time for meeting with CLAS advisors and registering for class. Don't miss that opporunity to get a great start on your academic experience. If you must register without help, below are step-by-step instructions.

Online Registration Instructions

Step 1: Add courses to your plan

Go to the Course Search and Schedule Planner to put together a schedule. Search and browse from the available courses, clicking on the "ADD" button next to each course you'd like to take. The schedule planner is like an online shopping cart.  It helps you pick out classes and save them to a plan, but you can’t actually register for them until you log into the SMART system.

Step 2: View and edit your plan

Click on the "View My Plan" tab in the Schedule Planner. Here's where you can see all the courses you've added in step one, and remove those you don't want to keep in your plan. Print our your plan for reference in the next steps.

Step 3:

Go to the SMART Registration .  Enter your student ID number and the PIN number given to you by Admissions.  Your PIN is a 4 digit number that has been randomly assigned to you.  It was sent to you through the mail and is on the piece of paper titled “Invitation to Register.”

Once you are logged on to the system, you have access to all of your academic records. You can change your address and pin, look up your records and grades, register and review your financial information.  It is a good idea to “look around” the web site andfamiliarize yourself with what information is available there.

Step 4:

Click on the Registration tab at the bottom of the screen, then click on the Register tab.Make sure that “Main Campus” is selected (this is the default) and that you select thecorrect semester.

Step 5:

Enter the call numbers (from the plan that you made) for the courses in which you would like to enroll.  When finished, hit the Submit Registration Requests button.  This will bring you to the next screen where in a bright red box it will tell you that you are enrolled.  If the course is full, or you are  unable to be enrolled, it will give you a message explaining why.

Step 6:

Click on the Schedule tab at the bottom of the screen to print out a copy of your schedule. Before printing, you must click your mouse on the screen near your schedule. Ifyou do not, only a blank page will print.

Step 7:

Remember to Log Out when you are finished.

Tips:

•Remember that since you are a new student you are required to meet with your advisor before registering.

•After a few minutes of inactivity, you will be logged out of the system for security purposes.

•Contact your Academic Advisor with any questions.

•Make sure that you print out a new copy of your schedule if you make any adjustments to it.
