Field Opportunities

Additional to coursework offered on campus, students have the opportunity for work in the field. This typically takes the form of summer research and field trips -- often involving international travel.

WINTER 2009 - 2010 -- MONDAÑA, ECUADOR

How do local populations retain the strengths of their culture and preserve their environment, yet create viable economic opportunities within an increasingly impoverished country? Questions of sustainability, whether of development, livelihoods, agriculture, or natural resources are topics of major importance generating concern and receiving attention from many sectors internationally, ranging from policy forums to university classrooms. This course will be a 4 week field-based course in which students will engage directly with issues of sustainability in the rainforest community of Mondaña, Ecuador. The course will be conducted during winter break, 2009-10 (December 14 - January 15).

While a partial understanding of the reality of development can be realized in the classroom, direct engagement with the people, settings and issues involved will create an awareness of both the complexities and opportunities in sustainable development in ways not possible in the classroom. The structure of the course will be such that students will acquire knowledge, specific skills on methods and practice, and a much deeper understanding of the lives of people in a developing country - all important in an increasingly globalized world.

We will address questions such as:
• What is sustainable development?
• How is it done?
• How do we know it when we meet it?
• How do we evaluate whether development processes or projects are indeed “sustainable” or not?
• Students, upon completion of the course, will have specific set of research skills on evaluating sustainable development efforts.
