Application Procedures for International Students
Students who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States should begin the application process by contacting the Office of International Admissions at UCD.

Online applications submitted electronically after the deadline dates WILL NOT be considered for that term. Applicants will be given the opportunity to have these applications considered for the next term.
Before submitting an application it is highly recommended that you meet with our Associate Chair for Graduate Studies, Dr. Timberley Roane, to make sure this program meets your needs and you meet the program requirements.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION
All applications will be considered INCOMPLETE and will not be reviewed without the following:
- UCD Graduate Application
- $50.00 Fee (please send checks directly to the Department)
- Completed Biology Supplemental Application and applicable documentation
- 2 official transcripst from each college and/or university the applicant has attended
- Three letters of recommendation (at least two must be academic) mailed directly to the Department from references
- GRE scores. Applicants will need to request their score be sent electronically to UCD at the time the GRE test is taken

Admission Requirements
Bachelor's Degree:
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university awarded within the preceding 9 years. Because of rapid advances in all area of Biology, students whose biology degrees were awarded 10 or more years prior to entrance into our program will be expected to re-take, or show competence in, the Biology core courses listed below.
Graduate Record Exam (GRE):
Applicants must also take the general Graduate Record Exam (GRE), which includes Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical sections. GRE scores must be available at the application deadline.
GPA/GRE Score:
Successful applicants almost always have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better and usually have a general GRE score above the 50th percentile. Most students admitted to the program have a degree in biology or an associated field, although students without biology degrees are accepted provided that they meet the following minimum undergraduate course requirements:
- General Biology I and II with laboratories or equivalent
- General Cell Biology or equivalent
- Principles of Ecology or equivalent
- General Genetics or equivalent
- One structure/function course
- General Chemistry I and II with laboratory or equivalent
If you are deficient in more than one of these course requirements, your application will not be considered.
The Application Process
A review for completeness of all applications will be done starting the first business day after the application deadline. Applicants will be notified by email of any missing documentation.

- Please calculate your undergraduate and graduate GPAs, separately, exclusive of physical education classes.
- Indicate, where appropriate, your intended area of concentration within biology, e.g., ecology, genetics, plant science, etc.

Biology Supplemental Forms
The Supplemental Application is a pfd form that you will need to open and save to your computer. Please complete the form then email it as an attachment (along with all supporting documentation) to jacki.craig@ucdenver.edu. You can also mail the application and supporting documentation to the Department. For a free download of Adobe Reader click here. The Biology Supplemental Application must be submitted before any application will be considered.
For Plan I (thesis option) applicants
You must indicate an area of concentration AND YOU MUST HAVE THE PRIOR APPROVAL OF A FACULTY MEMBER IN BIOLOGY WHO WILL SUPERVISE YOUR THESIS WORK. Prospective thesis students must have a tentative advisor listed on the application form. Plan I applications cannot be considered without this information.
For Plan II (course work only) applicants
All applicants must indicate an area of concentration in addition to the name of a faculty member in biology who has tentatively agreed to serve as your advisor. Applications cannot be considered without this information.
