New! Help Your Students Succeed
Academic Early Alert
Academic Early Alert is the university’s approach of identifying and contacting students in need of assistance early in the semester. We are all partners in the process, so your participation is crucial!
Faculty will be asked to log into the system starting the fifth week of the semester (Monday, Feb. 27 – Monday, Mar. 10). Alerts will be sent to academic advisors who will contact the students during the seventh week of the semester. Upon making initial contact with the students, the advisors will link students to appropriate campus resources. More information and instructions will follow by email.
For further information contact John Lanning at 303-556-6363. (information)
New! Nominate Grad Students for Scholarship
Nominations Due April 1
The UC Denver downtown campus offers two scholarship opportunities to our students: the undergraduate Alumni General Scholarship and the Alumni Association Graduate Scholarship. Both programs award $2000 per academic year to each scholarship winner ($1000 each semester upon verification of their continuing eligibility).
Only one graduate scholarship per college is awarded at this time, and requires faculty to nominate deserving students to Dean Hageman, who will make the final choice. Undergraduate students apply directly to the Alumni Office and compete for multiple awards.
Please send your nominations of students for the graduate scholarship to Jill Hutchison in the Dean's Office by April 1 for the 2008-9 award.
New! Volunteers Needed for Colorado History Day State Competition
The 27th annual statewide Colorado History Day competition will take place at Auraria on May 3, 2008.
Hundreds of high school and middle school students research and prepare projects on a range of historical topics for Colorado History Day. Students present the results of their research in a variety of formats, from the traditional research paper to a documentary, exhibit, Web Site or live performance.
Colorado History Day needs the help of scholars and academic professionals to help judge student entries. We also need volunteers in many roles—from participant registration, to helping students locate competition rooms, to organizing the event behind the scenes. Most of all, we are looking for willing people to help welcome the students, teachers, families and guests to our campus.
Please help us make this a memorable experience for students from around the state. If you would like to like to volunteer, please contact the Colorado History Day staff via email, or fill out an online volunteer registration form on the Colorado History Day Web site. The organizers will contact you to confirm your participation.

Direct Access to the Muslim World
April 1, 2008 is the deadline for 2009 awards for a Fulbright Visiting Specialist from the Muslim World. This program focuses on teaching and lecturing in both on-campus and off-campus venues. Focus may be on the arts, humanities, social sciences and other aspects of Islamic civilization and society. The grant is intended to assist with projects of lasting benefit, e.g., curriculum consultation, faculty enrichment, institutional linkage-building and may also focus on area partnerships (especially with historically minority institutions HBCU, Tribal, Hispanic colleges and community colleges). The program may focus on any number of global issues. Institutions with few/or no programs/courses related to Islam or the Muslim world are encouraged to apply.
The visiting specialist usually holds a Ph.D. or terminal degree and has extensive university teaching experience. Eligible disciplines:

Carolyn North, Assistant Vice Chancellor for International Affairs, believe we can pursue this grant from a number of perspectives--e.g., joint symposia, outreach to Denver community, curriculum development, and steps to institutional partnerships across disciplines.
The long list of participating countries includes most of the Islamic world in Africa, East Asia, Europe, Near East/North Africa, South and Central Asia.
Carolyn North will work with others to coordinate an institutional application. Please contact her if you have an interest in pursuing this grant. Some institutional cost sharing (housing support, office, assistance with transportation if needed) will be required.

Call for Judges: Denver Metro Regional Science & Engineering Fair
Calling Faculty, Staff and Students
For a second year, CLAS is sponsoring awards for the winning projects of the Denver Metro Regional Science and Engineering Fair, but we'd also like to lend support by providing volunteer judges.
If you enjoy science, have a good knowledge base, and enjoy working with students to help them develop their interest and skill in science, please consider judging at the 2008 Fair.
Judging will be Wednesday, Feb. 27, 11:00 am - 6:00 pm at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Lunch will be provided.
You may register online no later than Feb. 20, 2008.
To maintain a fair judging environment and avoid any possible conflicts of interest, please note any connections to a particular school or student in the comment section of the Judges Registration Form.
Detailed information will be sent to you via email a few weeks prior to the fair. If you have not received your email information by Feb. 22, please contact Greg Kinney or Meredith Tennis.
For more information on the fair, please contact Katy Brown.
2007-2008 CLAS Research Innovation Seed Program (CRISP)
Mar. 3 Deadline
CRISP grant proposals are invited from all tenured and tenure-track faculty to support research activities that will result in applications for external funding. Details of the program, submission requirements, allowed expenses, and required activities are included in the attached document, and the deadline for submission is Mar. 3, 2008. The college has committed $100,000 this year to support this program, which was developed by Dean Hageman, Associate Dean Brenda Allen, and Associate Dean Mary Coussons-Read.
Drafts of the program announcement were reviewed and supported by the CLAS Leadership Team, the CLAS BPC, the CLAS Council and the CLAS Chairs. The college anticipates making approximately 5 awards in each track of the program. Note that an essential aspect of the CRISP application is developing and documenting a relationship with the Office of Sponsored Programs to identify potential funding sources, and Mary Coussons-Read is glad to facilitate this process.
Please contact Mary Coussons-Read with any questions you might have regarding the announcement, the program or submission.
Be an Expert for Media Interviews
New Web Site to be Launched Soon!
The Media and PR office is about to launch a new exciting Web site complete with an experts list. We want to make sure you are included on that list if you have interest in helping with media interviews.
Some of you may have already heard from the PR and Media office as you are already on their experts list. But we want to make sure no one is overlooked.
If you want to be included on this list, please send an email to Jacque Montgomery with the following information:
1. Your name
2. Your area of emphasis (that is what you likely would want to be tapped to comment on)
3. Your preferred contact method and information. (Do you want reporters to work through the media relations team to connect with you, or can they call your office or cell phone directly? Jacque, the new director of media and PR, is happy to support whichever method you are most comfortable with.)
Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program
From Aristotle and Plato to Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis H. Sullivan, students and their mentors have been collaborating to produce works of scholarly merit. The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, established in 1994, enhances undergraduate education by funding students engaged in research, scholarly, creative and entrepreneurial activities in collaboration with faculty at the downtown campus. Projects are either designed around the activities of a faculty member or designed independently by a student or team of students and endorsed by a faculty sponsor.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Mar. 14
Forms can now be found online!
Anticipated award announcement will be on Apr. 11 at our Research and Creative Activities Day. Approximately 20-30 awards will be available through UROP for fiscal year 2008-09 (July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009).
