A message from Kathleen Bollard
Dear Colleagues,
I wanted to let you know that I have decided to return to the Modern Languages Department for another four-year term as chair, beginning in August. There are many exciting projects underway that I want to work on, including degree tracks in International Language and Culture for the Professions, licensure programs in Spanish and French, the Spanish M.A., and the Spanish internship program. In addition, we plan to look into funding for a Heritage Speakers program and to develop coursework in Spanish for Health and Human Services. This year we were one of only 22 departments in the country awarded new Title VIA grants, and that money has allowed us to develop not only the new professional degree tracks, but also business case studies for use in lower-division language courses, a project that is the first of its kind in the country. The grant also provides funds to further develop our growing Chinese program, and I look forward to working with colleagues across campus on a teaching licensure program and coursework in Chinese for Business. We anticipate many fruitful links with the new Confucius Institute at CCD and with the International College in Beijing.
I have truly enjoyed working with so many of you on curriculum, scheduling, strategic planning, space issues, and other tasks, and I am very grateful for all the help you have given me over the past year. I am especially grateful to Jim Smith, Jon Harbor, and all of my colleagues in the CLAS Dean’s office, who have encouraged, supported, and laughed with me every day. I have enjoyed the administrative work very much, but my passion is for languages, Early Modern Literature, and above all, teaching, and I look forward to returning to my books and my students.
With all best wishes,
Kathleen Bollard

Lunch, Learn & Link
In an effort to increase awareness about CLAS and create connections with the business community, Dean Harbor has planned a summer program lecture series with the Downtown Denver Partnership (DDP). Skyline Park, located between 15th and 16th between Lawrence and Arapahoe (by the Palomino Grill) is where the program will take place. The DDP will handle the advertising of the lectures with the downtown business community, and CLAS will provide logistical support for the events. Attendees, while listening to a 15 minute presentation from one of our faculty members, will eat their lunches, then link up in small groups to discuss the presentation for another 15 minutes, followed by a short period of Q&A with the full group and faculty member.
Please contact Katy Brown by April 20 if you are interested in participating as one of the lecturers, and please also provide some topics that you think would be interesting to the business community.
