New! First CLAS Staff Award Announced
Although the focus of the Annual Dean's Reception in the past has been on faculty and student awards, this year's reception initiated a new tradition--the presentation of the CLAS Outstanding Staff Award. Given to a single staff member who demonstrates outstanding leadership, ability, initiative and/or achievement, the CLAS Outstanding Staff Award recognizes a staff member whose contributions have provided a significant benefit specifically to CLAS and UCD. The recipient will receive a $500 cash award.
There were nine outstanding nominees for this year's staff award, which made the committee's decision very difficult. While all the staff who were nominated were deserving of awards, Steve Honda, Assistant Dean for Budget and Finance was selected based on the overwhelming support he received in nomination letters from chairs, faculty and staff. One of his nominators, Associate Professor and Chair of History, Myra Rich, said, "Steve is the rock upon which the college has been standing for almost a decade."
The nominees for the CLAS Outstanding Staff Award include:
Steve Honda, Assistant Dean for Budget and Finance, CLAS
Trishia Vasquez (runner-up), Academic Advisor, CLAS
Russel Boice, Coordinator, Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences
Gay Freebern, Program Assistant, Psychology
Cory Gruebele, Program Assistant, Political Science
Catherine Rathbun, Lab Coordinator, Chemistry
Scott Sherter, Program Assistant, English
Sally Thee, Program Assistant, Communication
Jennifer Williams, Program Assistant, Ethnic Studies

New! Get Ready for Colfax Marathon May 18
It's time to get registered for the 2008 Post-News Colorado Colfax Marathon, Half-Marathon or 5-person Marathon Relay Team events on Sunday, May 18. You can run, jog, walk and raise funds for 41 local charities. You can even just show up along the route to cheer on the participants, or volunteer to help make things run smoothly.
UC Denver's Jay Gershen, vice chancellor for External Affairs, is the chair of this year's event. He especially notes that forming a relay team might be an ideal option to get in on the action without having to go the full distance alone. While the races start and finish at Denver's City Park, the Half-Marathon course loops through the Anschutz Medical Campus.
This event is packed with more interest activities including the National Wheelchair Marathon Championships and the Colorado Kids Marathon Milers. A call also is going out for musical entertainment that will be featured along the route. Get all the details at on their web site.
