Faculty invited to try for Hong Kong Fulbright
Apply by August 1
UCDHSC faculty members’ education and experience might qualify for the Fulbright Hong Kong General Education Program (FHKGEP). This is a traditional Fulbright Program for U.S. scholars, which is designed to support Hong Kong universities as they prepare to introduce new four-year undergraduate degree programs in 2012. More than 20 awards will be granted between 2008 and 2012. Early application is encouraged.
Visit the Hong Kong American Centre website for more information about the goals and objectives of the Hong Kong General Education Initiative.
Please visit the Council of International Exchange of Scholars website to view the official Fulbright (FHKGEP) Awards Announcement.

Graduate Advisors: New billing policy
Avoid $100 drop charges
All graduate thesis and project advisors need to be aware of the effect of the new billing policy being implemented for Fall 2007. Students who drop any courses after the first week of classes (August 27) must pay a penalty of $100 per dropped course, regardless of the reason. Many students sign up for thesis or project credits without truly understanding the difference between the two, then request changes from one to the other during the semester or retroactively for previous semesters. This will now cost $100 for EACH semester changed. Please let your advisees know about this policy and help them to make the appropriate choice for registration when you sign off on Special Processing forms and the Application for Admission to Candidacy. You should: 1) check their online transcripts to ascertain what their previous registrations have been, and maintain either the thesis or the project from semester to semester 2) advise them about the implications of doing a thesis (ie., mandatory format review, formal printing and binding charges, placement in the library, etc.) as opposed to a project which is more of a departmental review. If you have questions, please contact Tammy Stone or Jill Hutchison in the Dean's Office. Thank you for your assistance.
Alumni Association grants graduate student scholarship

Deidre "Dee" Morgenthaler
Communication student awarded $1400
Deirdre “Dee” Morgenthaler was enthusiastically nominated by Assistant Professor Omar Swartz from the Department of Communication to receive the Alumni Association’s first-time graduate student award. “I speak for the faculty when I write that she is bright, articulate, engaged, conscientious, dedicated to learning and professional,” said Swartz. Morgenthaler has provided support to the department through her work as a research assistant, teaching assistant and community builder. “Since enrolling in our MA program in the fall of 2004, Dee has stood out in all her courses and has had a positive impact on the larger departmental community,” said Swartz. Morgenthaler’s research focuses on media literacy, specifically the connection between the use of new types of “participatory” media and the social engagement of their users. She has presented her research at the department’s Communication Days events and at the 2007 Rocky Mountain Communication Association conference. She plans to apply for the doctoral program in the School of Education and Human Development at UCDHSC this summer.
Student Convocation
Office of Student Life invites you to welcome the class of 2011
Friday, Aug. 17
11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
9th Street Park
Student Life’s goals for this year’s convocation are to welcome students, increase student connection to campus, increase understanding of what it means to be a UCDHSC student, and begin creating campus traditions. Each school and college will sit in their own designated sections, and a faculty or staff member will be seated at each table to help welcome students and strike up conversation. The formal program will last one hour including lunch, a presentation by each of the deans on the Mission, Vision and Values for UCDHSC, and a group reading of the “Honor Pledge.” Student Life feels that this is a great way to both introduce students to what we value as a community and to create a tradition and symbolic commitment to the honor code and values of the institution.
Please let Student Life know if you have questions or need more information. Suggestions for increasing participation are welcome also. Contact Larry Loften by email or at 303-556-3682.
Student email addresses
More than 4,000 students haven't activated official email
According to ITS more than 4000 students have not activated their Official University email account. The date for students to have completed this was May 13, 2007. We are sending out e-mail activation reminders to all students as part of the fall billing cycle. Please re-iterate this requirement with students in advising sessions or in class. Faculty and administration must use the official UCDHSC – assigned address when corresponding with students via email. Official e-mail addresses have been updated on SIS and on CU On-line. Please make sure that if you have student rosters on other data bases that these data now reflect only the official UCDHSC e-mail addresses. If you have questions about this policy, please see their website for more information.
Ouray e-mail forwarding for students discontinued
The forwarding of e-mail addressed to the old student @ouray.cudenver.edu addresses has been discontinued. All students have been assigned official email addresses in the format of firstname.lastname@email.cudenver.edu. Please use these official e-mail addresses for all of your correspondence with students. Students may activate their accounts; reset their passwords and setup e-mail forwarding here. If you (or your students) have any questions, contact the DDC Help Desk at 303-315-4357.
