New! Computer Replacement Budget
Effective this fiscal year, the responsibility for overseeing computer workstation replacement has been transferred from ITS to the university's schools & colleges. The CLAS technology committee created a policy to guide the equitable distribution of those resources to the various CLAS departments. That policy can be found on the CLAS policies web page.
A key element of the policy is that resources are to be distributed annually in shares based on relative percentages of eligible employees (faculty and staff). It is acknowledged that for small units, it may be necessary to accumulate funds over multiple years in order to replace workstations. It is expected that departments will develop their own internal criteria for distribution among faculty and staff.
Please contact Associate Dean Mary Coussons-Read if you have questions.
New! New Digs for the CLAS Advising Office
The CLAS Advising Office has expanded their operation to one of the Modular Buildings near the Tivoli Student Union. Graduation certifications by CLAS departments will take place in the main office in NC 2024.

New! CLAS Graduate Student Scholarship
Awarded by the UCDHSC Alumni Association
The UCDHSC downtown campus offers two scholarship opportunities to our students through the Alumni Association: the undergraduate Alumni General Scholarship and the Alumni Association Graduate Scholarship. Both programs award $2000 per academic year to each scholarship winner ($1000 each semester upon verification of their continuing eligibility).
Only one graduate scholarship per college is awarded at this time, and requires faculty to nominate deserving students to Dean Hageman, who will make the final choice. (Undergraduate students apply directly to the Alumni Office and compete for multiple awards.)
Please send your nominations of students for the graduate scholarship to the attention of Jill Hutchison in the Dean's Office by April 1 for the
2008-9 award.

Mathematical Sciences Professor Stanley E. Payne collaborated with Ilaria Cardinali to write "q-Clan Geometries in Characteristic 2," a Frontiers in Mathematics resource book focusing on finite geometry research. It was just published by Birkhauser Verlag. Payne met Cardinali while he was on sabbatical in 2002 at the University of Naples in Italy, and it was there they conceived of the idea to write this book.
