New! CLAS Welcomes Two New Hires
Laurel Dodds Laurel Dodds, the newest hire to CLAS, is the managing director for the CLAS Signature Areas, working specifically on Environome Science, Sustainability and Geo-Spatial Technologies. This position is a natural fit for Dodds’ extensive interdisciplinary experience. With a BS in art education from the University of Vermont, she has taught and evaluated district arts curricula and designed and taught interdisciplinary arts courses. In addition to her arts background, Dodds acquired a Masters in Professional Studies in interactive telecommunications at New York University, using her degree to build a program at a state college in New Jersey into a successful regional continuing and professional education service center. As director of telecommunications for a small town in central Pennsylvania, she was tapped by the Office of Technology Assessment of the US Congress to consult on wireless communications for a congressional report. An AT&T Fellowship at the American Center for the Study of Distance Education at Penn State University allowed Dodds to pursue her doctorate. When illness forced her to drop her doctoral studies to recuperate, she received an offer from the University of Tennessee to direct its distance education program in Knoxville. She spent four years expanding the program from tape and off-campus traditional delivery to interactive video and online courses, negotiating contracts with other campuses and institutions. A desire to increase her skills and experience in distance education took her to Texas at the University of Houston Clear Lake where she was involved in a multi-campus system that operated multi-institution teaching centers around the city. Her next two assignments were at a Catholic minority-serving institution where she directed academic technology and at an online university where she was an assistant dean. When Dodds isn’t busy working on interdisciplinary studies, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Alan, her three children and two granddaughters. As active gardeners, Dodds and her husband “look forward to being able to have a property in the Denver area with which to grow vegetables and flowers and enjoy the wonderful Colorado outdoor life.”
Resa Cooper-Morning Cultural Diversity Coordinator Resa Cooper-Morning is excited to work in the Ethnic Studies Department to further their mission, as well as support diversity initiatives in the college and university. Her position will develop D2 and D3 courses to serve businesses in the Denver metro area. Additionally, she will offer cultural diversity training for students in the residential halls as recommended by the Blue Ribbon Commission. With a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, a minor in African-American studies and a master's degree in pubic administration from the UC Denver School of Public Affairs, Cooper-Morning will bring solid knowledge and experience to the position. “Having worked for the University of Colorado Denver for over 15 years in the Business School, and developing a comfortable rapport with students and the business community,” she said, “I am dedicated to continuing my service to this university and assist in making it a great institution.”
New! Spring 2008 Academic Calendar for SyllabiPlease include the attached academic calendar and CLAS academic policies in every CLAS syllabus. It is critical that this occur to be sure we are communicating essential information to our students about add/drop deadlines and policies. While we realize this is two extra pages for your syllabus, it is critical that we use all available mechanisms to provide our students with this type of information. It also gives you as a faculty member, and the college as a whole, a stronger base to stand on when students confront us about policies and procedures. As a reminder, faculty are not required to sign a Schedule Adjustment Form after the published drop dates for the college. It is within the scope of your authority to ask students to provide documentation prior to dropping a course. Please contact Associate Dean Charlie Ferguson if you have any questions.
