Survey Request from President Brown

* This is important; please respond yourself and also forward to appropriate faculty.
(From President Brown): In August 2006, Colorado Municipal League (CML) Director Sam Mamet and I established a working partnership to develop closer ties among CML, Colorado's cities and towns, and the University of Colorado. The goal is to tap the expertise of teaching faculty, researchers, students and staff from the various departments, centers, colleges, schools and institutes within the entire University system to benefit Colorado's local governments. Dr. John Buechner, President Emeritus and Professor Emeritus and former city councilman and mayor, is directing the project to design and develop elements of a working partnership.

As a first step, we are trying to identify University of Colorado resources, by campus, which may be available to assist Colorado municipalities in addressing current and projected issues, and to develop a mechanism for sharing that information. We need your help in accomplishing this task. Please go to the following link and complete the brief survey. You can fill it out yourself or send it to department heads or other faculty and staff who you think are best able to provide the needed information. You may send in as many surveys as you wish; however, please complete all surveys by March 5, 2007.

Thank you for your participation. Hank Brown, President

Amendment 41

Internal Scholarships
Questions are starting to arise from departments working on awarding their standard internal scholarships to their students, wondering if they should be worrying about Amendment 41 as they consider possible recipients. After consulting our Legal Counsel, we were told that, ” Any scholarships awarded by UCDHSC to students are not subject to Amendment 41”.

New CLAS Policy

Teaching Load for New Tenure/Tenure-Track Hires
The following policy for the teaching load of new tenure / tenure-track faculty has been approved by the CLAS Council and the CLAS chairs, and is now in effect:

“In an attempt to ensure that all new tenure/tenure-track faculty successfully make the transition from applicants to productive faculty members in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College and Departments will ensure that they have sufficient time in their first year to learn the culture of the institution, become integrated into the affairs of the department and establish a healthy and productive research agenda. As such, all new faculty will be given a maximum teaching load of three classes their first year. Additionally, when possible, one of the classes should be a repeat rather than three new preparations. This would ensure that the new faculty member has a maximum of two new preparations during their first year at UCDHSC. Resources to hire lecturers may be provided at the Dean’s discretion based on enrollment demands.”

Financial Compliance

Audit Procedure
If you or your department is contacted by an auditor or receives notification of an audit, please contact the Dean’s Office immediately to ensure that the appropriate individuals are notified. The Dean’s Office can help ensure that coordination occurs with the proper campus areas. Please contact Steve Honda (303) 556-3410 or JoAnn Pugh (303) 556-2120 if you have any questions regarding this or any other financial compliance issue.

UROP Grant Proposals for Student Research

Submission Date:  March 16
Please encourage your students to submit a grant for student research. The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) enhances undergraduate education by funding students engaged in research, scholarly, creative, and entrepreneurial activities in collaboration with faculty at the downtown Denver campus. Projects are either designed around the activities of a faculty member or designed independently by a student or team of students and endorsed by a faculty sponsor.
APPLICATION DEADLINE MARCH 16, 2007
(anticipated award announcement on April 20, 2007 at our Research and Creative Activities Day).
Participation in UROP is an intense educational experience that introduces students to the process of research, including writing a proposal, preparing a budget, conducting research, analyzing data, and bringing the project to closure in the form of a written abstract and presentation, demonstration or performance. Approximately 20-30 awards will be available through UROP for fiscal year 2007-08 (July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008). Contact Dr. Brad Stith with any questions 303-556-3371.
