Undergraduate Major in English (B.A. Degree)

The course of study offered by the Department of English is designed to develop a student’s ability to read literature responsibly and imaginatively, to foster an understanding and appreciation of our literary inheritance, and to provide the historical perspective from which to evaluate contemporary writing. Careful study of the use of the English language also should help a student to resist the misuse and corruption of language in politics, the media, and elsewhere.

Students who complete the program in English are expected to have mastered the ability to express their ideas in clear and succinct prose.

Focus of Study: one of three Options

Students must choose one of three options:

  1. Literature
  2. Creative Writing (not the same as majoring in English writing)
  3. Film Studies

Other important Requirements

A total of 39 credit hours in the major

Students majoring in English must present a total of 39 credit hours in English literature, film, and/or creative writing (excluding ENGL 1010, 1020, and 2030 which satisfy core requirements of the B.A.). A minimum of 27 of those credit hours must be earned in upper-division courses.

Grades Requirement

None of the required 39 credit hours may be taken on a pass/fail basis. Only courses completed with a grade of C (2.0) or above may be counted toward the major.

Transfer Credit Limitations

At least 15 upper division hours of the student’s work in English must be taken from English faculty on the downtown Denver campus.

Deadline to Declare a Major

An undergraduate wishing to major in English must declare a major and option by the time they have completed 60 semester hours. Students planning to major in English literature must consult with an advisor as soon as possible.

Double English/English Writing Majors

Students interested in a double major must choose one option in the English major (literature, creative writing, or film studies) as well as the writing major, and are required to complete 21 different courses (63 hours).
