Cancelling Courses
You can keep track of course enrollments on SIS. Generally, courses need to meet minimum enrollments to be taught.
Minimum Enrollments (typical)
- lower division 15,
- upper division, 12,
- graduate (5000 level) 9,
- graduate (6000 and above) 5
The Decision to Cancel
The Dean's Office will contact Chairs about early course cancellations (for classes with little or no enrollment) about three to four weeks before the term starts. Chairs will be asked to make final cancellation decisions the Thursday before the term begins.
Reassigning Faculty
Tenured and tenure-track faculty will need to be assigned to
other courses if their courses are cancelled. Instructor and lecturer contracts state that their
appointments are “contingent on the required number of enrollments in your tentatively
scheduled course(s), availability of funding and the Dean’s decision regarding effective use of
College resources. We cannot guarantee that you will actually teach in ...”.
Department chairs may elect to bump lecturers to accommodate first tenure/tenure-track faculty and secondarily instructors whose classes are cancelled.
