Students with Disabilities
The University of Colorado at Denver is committed to providing reasonable accommodation and access to programs and services for students with disabilities. UC Denver strives to comply with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and The Americans for Disabilities Act (ADA).
Please Note: The College has established formal policies to assist students with disabilities that impact modern language and mathematics classes. Students with disabilities should be directed to the CLAS Advising Office, NC 2024 for assistance in meeting CLAS modern language and mathematics requirements.
Student Responsibilities
UC Denver students seeking accommodations for any type of disability must be registered with the UC Denver Disability Resources and Services (DRS) office. DRS staff are available to provide assistance to students with disabilities and arrange for reasonable accommodations that will address specific educational needs.
Disability Resources and Services
For a student to access accommodations, please contact the Office of Disability Resources (DRS):
North Classroom 2514
Phone: 303-556-3450; TTY: 303-556-4766; Fax: 303-556-4771.
Faculty Responsibilities
Once students complete the process of determining eligibility for accommodations, they will present an accommodation letter to their faculty members. If a faculty member believes the accommodations will alter the curriculum, please contact DRS staff to review the matter. The College strongly encourages faculty to work with DRS staff and to rely on their expertise in determining reasonable accommodations.
Frequently Encountered Situations
Faculty are approached by a student claiming a disability and requesting accommodation(s):
It is acceptable to work directly with students; however, faculty are strongly encouraged to work with DRS to verify the student is registered with their office and the requested accommodations provide equal access not an advantage. Faculty are not required to provide any accommodations to students unless they present a letter from DRS.
Student approaches faculty for accommodations after midterm examinations:
Students are responsible for contacting DRS and arranging reasonable accommodations. Students may request and/or utilize accommodations at any time during the semester. Once accommodations are approved, they are effective from that date forward. Accommodations may not be applied retroactively.
Faculty are uncertain as to what constitutes reasonable accommodation:
DRS staff are the best resource in arranging reasonable accommodations. Accommodations are based upon the disability limitations and may include note takers in class, alternative testing (extra time, reader, scribe), books in alternate format (CD, enlarged print, Braille) and interpreter or captionist.
