Dental Hygiene Careers
CU Health Sciences Center Degree Program
The program in dental hygiene requires four years and leads to a B.S. degree. Each professional class at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry is limited to 20 students.
A minimum of 60 semester hours of undergraduate work is to be completed prior to final acceptance to the program. This is followed by two years of academic and clinical work at the C.U. School of Dentistry. The program at the C.U. School of Dentistry begins in the fall and goes year round for the two years.
Required Pre-Requisite Undergraduate Courses
- English Composition - 3 semester hours
- Introduction to Psychology - 3 semester hours
- Public Speaking - 3 semester hours
- Sociology - 3 semester hours
- General Chemistry for majors with lab - 2 semesters (10 credit hours)
- General Biology for majors with lab - 2 semesters (8 credit hours)
Recommended Electives
Human Anatomy and Physiology, microbiology, humanities, behavioral sciences and business courses are recommended as electives.
Students are responsible for having current knowledge of all prerequisites.
Selection Process
The Dental Hygiene program will evaluate all applicants on the basis of:
- Cumulative grade point average
- Science grade point average
- Letters of recommendation
- Applicants personal statement
- Interview scores
- Full-time student for one semester (minimum)
- Previous dental experience
Application Process
- Applications may be filed after July 1 of the year preceding admission and must be filed by January 1 of the year you wish to enter the program. It is strongly recommended that your application and all supporting documentation be submitted prior to December
- There is a $50.00 non-refundable application fee (subject to change at any time without notice)
- Official transcripts of all college work completed must be sent directly from each college or university you have attended.
- Official High school transcripts are required
- Two letters of recommendation are required. One from instructors who have taught a science course and one from an instructor who has taught a non-science course at the undergraduate level.
- A recent photograph, signed
