Program Overview

The goals of the degree program leading to the Master's of Science in Public Health are to:

  • Educate students in the core content and methodological areas of public health (epidemiology, bio-statistics, health care systems, occupational and environmental health, and social and community factors in health)
  • Prepare students for practical application of skills and knowledge to public and community health research, community needs assessment, program planning and evaluation, and health policy research.
  • Enrich graduate medical education program and continuing education for public health professionals.

The program is designed for individuals working or expecting to work in academic or clinical settings, industry, government health agencies, or international health.

Required program courses include epidemiology, health care systems, bio-statistics, occupational and environmental health, social and community factors in health, research methods in community health, and community health practice (a practicum experience). Electives may include departmental offerings, as well as a broad range of courses offered in other programs of the CU Health Sciences Center and on the Boulder and Denver Campuses of the University. Independent study may be organized with departmental faculty and through a variety of health agencies.

Pre-Requisite Courses

There are no specific academic pre-requisites for entry into the program, other than the qualifications required by the Graduate School. The approximatley 60 students currently enrolled have a broad range of academic preparation, experiences, and career goals. Because the program is committed to maintaining the high quality of faculty-student interactions, it will remain relatively small, admitting approximately 25 new students each year. Interviews are strongly encouraged. Application Deadline is February 1st.
