Teaching Interests

I teach courses on Latin America, Mexico, and Latinos in the United States. The encounter between distinct societies is a central topic in my courses but it is also one of my objectives: I want students to experience history as a discovery of the other. I design my classes to inform students not only of the political and economic evolution of Latin American societies but also torecreat a worldview distinct from their own.

Research Interests

My recent book A Nation of Villages: Riot and Rebellion in the Mexican Huasteca, 1750 to 1850 <http://www.uapress.arizona.edu/BOOKS/bid1570.htm> describes how indigenous villagers participated in Mexico's difficult transition from colonial domination to republican rule. The book demonstrates how the rural majority shaped political outcomes in nineteenth century Mexico using the case study of the indigenous villages in the Huasteca region.

My current research project describes the shifts in popular political culture in nineteenth century Mexico by delving into municipal archives in the small towns of central Veracruz.  The project uses examples from elections, conflict over town government, land tenure and daily life to illustrate what changed after Mexico’s independence.
