Honors in History
If you qualify, we strongly urge you to pursue honors in history. An honors designation celebrates your high level of achievement in both the discipline and your entire undergraduate program. It can be especially helpful to you if you hope to compete for admission to a highly selective graduate program.
REQUIREMENTS FOR DEPARTMENTAL HONORS
Students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher may compete for a degree in history awarded with Latin praise of cum laude, magna cum laude, or summa cum laude.
The following cumulative GPAs are required:
- 3.5-3.69 for cum laude
- 3.7-3.89 for magna cum laude
- 3.9-4.0 for summa cum laude
Research paper required
Additionally, students must enroll for HIST 4849, a 3-credit independent study course for history honors research paper preparation. In this course, students prepare and submit a research paper for honors review by a faculty committee.
