Master's Degree Admission Requirements

Candidates for admission to the program should have substantial background in history, though not necessarily a major in the subject. Knowledge of the humanities and allied social sciences contribute to an adequate foundation for graduate work. The department encourages applications from individuals interested in resuming their education.

In addition to the general admission requirements of the Graduate School, the History Department usually requires an undergraduate G.P.A. of at least 3.25. We also require students to submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination.

Any gaps, weaknesses, or special circumstances affecting an applicant’s academic record should be addressed in the statement of purpose portion of the application. In special circumstances, the department may modify its admission standards.

How to Apply

Applicants for admission to the History Master's Program must submit:

  1. Parts I and II of the UC Denver Graduate School Application Form, including the Tuition Classification form, which may be obtained from the departmental program coordinator. 
  2. Two official transcripts for all academic work in colleges and universities completed to date.
  3. Three letters of reference. Nominators must include the applicant's name and social security number in their letter of reference. (forms are available with the application at the URL above)
  4. A writing sample, preferably of academic work.
  5. A $50, non-refundable application fee. For international applicants, the application fee is $75. No application will be processed until this fee is paid.
  6. Scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

Applications are accepted at any time. The admissions committee will evaluate applications at least once a semester.
