Requirements for the History Major

COURSE Requirements: 36 to 48 credit hours
Students must complete a mimimum of 36 semester hours in approved history courses. And, at least 18 of those credits must be upper-division hours earned at the University of Colorado. Not more than 48 hours of history will be counted toward graduation requirements.
As of Fall semester, 2006, no grade lower than a C will count for classes taken in the major. A student must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or better in the major to graduate.
Required History Courses -- 6 total credit hours
HIST 3031. Theory and Practice of History -- 3 credit hours
HIST 4839. History Seminar -- 3 credit hours
Students declaring a history major as of Fall 2007 are required to maintain a portfolio of their written work. This portfolio will be required for entry into the senior seminar and graduation as a history major.
Distribution Requirement -- 18 credit hours minimum
Students must take a minimum of 6 credit hours (typically two courses) in each of the following areas:
- United States
- Europe
- The World
At least 3 credit hours in each area must be upper-division.
Electives -- 12 credit hours minimum
The degree requires a minimum of 12 additional credit hours of electives, which can be satisfied by a combination of additional history courses, internships, or honors independent study for eligible students.
