Interim Dean, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences,
Professor of Chemistry

Jim Hageman

Education

Dr. Hageman received his doctorate in biochemistry from UCLA and completed his post-doctoral studies in microbial genetics at Yale University. He earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois, C-U.

Previous Administrative Appointments

Prior to coming to UC Denver in August of 2006, Jim Hageman served for six years as Dean of the College of Graduate Studies and Vice Provost for Research at Central Michigan University. In that position, Dr. Hageman assisted in increasing external funding for research grants and contracts 3-4 fold, prepared a comprehensive strategic plan for research, helped found the White Pine Music label, filed about a dozen patents on behalf of faculty and conducted a comprehensive analysis of graduate programs.

He served as head of Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at New Mexico State University from 1992-1998, after serving as founding director of the Graduate Program in Molecular Biology the previous four years.

Research Interests

Dr. Hageman has worked with undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral students on federally funded projects resulting in publication of over 40 peer-reviewed works in the areas of:

  • proteinases and protein degradation,
  • enzyme kinetics,
  • calcium binding proteins in bacteria,
  • the synthesis and biological applications of aryl boronic acids (which resulted in the development of two commercial products),
  • and the domestication of Russian thistle.

A great deal of his research work was aimed at involving ethnic minority students, particularly Native American and Latino students, in active laboratory projects. He has recently filed a full patent on the use of a new device and process for carrying out chemical reactions to aid in the teaching of chemistry in classroom settings.

Community Connections

Dr. Hageman has served on the Examinations Committee of the American Chemical Society, in which he was involved in preparing several national standardized exams in biochemistry. He also has served on the NSF Graduate Fellowships Committee, a Minority Biomedical Research panel of the NIH and for three years on the Governmental Relations Committee of the Council for Chemical Research.
