This document specifies degree requirements for undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) seeking secondary foreign language teacher licensure through the Initial Professional Teacher Education (IPTE) program in the School of Education (SOE). The requirements specified below fulfill all degree and licensure requirements. Students should attend a CLAS/SOE orientation for an overview of undergraduate teacher licensure. Students are responsible for knowing and fulfilling all degree requirements. Academic advising is strongly encouraged each semester and is available from the CLAS Advising Office, NC 2024, 303-556-2555. Students should meet with the faculty advisor in French designated to work with secondary licensure students (Plaza 118N, 303-556-4893).
General education requirements in English composition, oral communication and mathematics must be completed with each course grade a ‘C’ (2.00) or higher. Courses with an ‘R’ prefix are required to meet IPTE admission requirements, and courses with an ‘S’ prefix are suggested for content breadth essential for secondary French teachers.

The IPTE advisor in the School of Education verifies course work requirements for Internships, PLACE or PRAXIS II content testing, and completion of IPTE course requirements for secondary social studies licensure. The CLAS advisor verifies IPTE course work applied to BA degree requirements.
CLAS students may wish to speak with an advisor in the School of Education about obtaining a content or education master’s degree following completion of the BA degree.
BA Degree and Colorado Licensure
CLAS students must complete the 30-hr major in French with an emphasis in secondary foreign language licensure to fulfill graduation requirements for the major. It is preferable to complete the BA – French courses before starting the IPTE program, but a small number of French courses can be completed concurrently with IPTE course work. Students must complete the 32-hr IPTE program for Colorado licensure.
The semester before planned graduation, CLAS students must meet with their CLAS and SOE advisors to verify completion of course work requirements for the BA degree and Colorado secondary foreign language licensure, and to select course work for the last semester. Students must formally apply for both graduation and licensure, meet the application deadlines, and satisfactorily complete the last semester course work.
