Latin

Why study Latin?

While it is true that there are few fluent Latin speakers and no native ones in our world today, Latin has historically exerted a major influence on many other languages that are still thriving, including English. Latin also continues to be widely employed as a source of vocabulary in such fields as science, academia, and law. Romance languages, such as Italian, Spanish, and French, are descended from Latin. And many words adapted from Latin are found in English, as well as other modern languages.

Developing a command of Latin provides the linguist with the power to decifer and learn other languages quickly. The study of Latin can help build a bridge between the rote learning of verbs and nouns, and the deeper meaning and history of many Western languages.
