Research in Dr. Peter Kaplan's Laboratory

Dr. Peter Kaplan in the Department of Psychology has openings for volunteer and paid research assistants. Dr. Kaplan's research focuses on infant learning in relation to postpartum depression. Research assistants will have the opportunity to receive training on an attachment measure and utilize the measure with research participants from the community. Other research tasks may include data entry, assisting with running experiments, and participant recruitment. A commitment of one year is required. Independent study opportunities may be available as well. Interested students should contact Christina Danko at Christina.Danko@email.cudenver.edu or 303-556-4485.

Research in Dr. Elizabeth Allen's Laboratory

Dr. Beth Allen in the Department of Psychology at the University of Colorado Denver is now accepting applications for independent study positions. Dr. Allen’s research focuses on relationships and couple functioning. Students who are accepted for an independent study in Dr. Allen’s lab will be exposed to a range of literature on couple functioning and sexual behavior, including factors related to sexually transmitted diseases. Several hypotheses involve cultural variations in relationships and sexual risk. Research tasks will vary from student to student, but likely include literature review, data entry and management, interacting with research participants and administering aspects of the research protocol, and coding couple interactions. These experiences will provide exposure to the research process and the literature in this area, as well as provide opportunities to learn various research tools such as SPSS.

To be eligible, you need to have a declared major or minor that is consistent with the project (subject to approval by Dr. Allen and a CLAS Associate Dean) and a minimum CU GPA of 3.0. To register for 4840, you must be a junior or senior. To register for 2840, you must be a sophomore. It is preferred that applicants have completed a research methods/statistics course.

If you are accepted into the independent study, you will be required to complete 10 participation hours per week and a final written report on a topic related to the research. You will receive 3 hours of credit; please see your advisor about how this would fit into your major and elective structure. Registration is an individual process with Dr. Allen; we submit paperwork to the Dean to get you signed up (you do not register through SMART).

Interested students should complete the application below. Once you have completed the application, there will be an interview process to further determine whether this opportunity is a good fit for you. If you have questions, call or email Dr. Allen at (303) 352-3656/elizabeth.allen@cudenver.edu.
