Samuel Priest Rose Scholarships

Dr. Samuel Priest Rose was born July 16, 1955 and died September 19, 1994. He was graduated from Yale University in 1977 and earned his Ph.D. at the University of Denver in Developmental Psychology in1990. Dr. Rose taught at the University of Colorado at Denver and was popular with students in his “Psychology of the Self” course for which he received excellent evaluations and comments. He was co-author with his mentor, Dr. Kurt W. Fischer of two articles and a book, with Dr. Fischer publishing additional aspects of their work since Dr. Rose’s death. Dr. Rose also presented papers at national and international meetings of the American Psychological Association, American Public Health Association, and the Society for Research in Child Development. His brilliant mind, compassionate heart, playful humor, and searching spirituality illuminated our lives too briefly.

AMOUNT

The amount and number of scholarships awarded each year varies. Typically, two or more scholarships of at least $2000.00 are awarded. Scholarships cover tuition and fees and are distributed in two payments, one each semester (Fall and Spring) of the academic year. Recipients will be limited to one year of funding.

REQUIRED QUALIFIERS

Applicants for the Samuel Priest Rose Memorial Scholarship must meet the following guidelines:

  • Full-time, undergraduate student at UCD
  • Declared Psychology major
  • Demonstrated financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office. In situations where the standard UCD financial aid application is not appropriate, please demonstrate a similar level of financial need to that which would be evidenced by the application through a one-paragraph description of your financial circumstances.
  • Cumulative GPA at UCD of 3.0 or higher
  • Accepted for enrollment as a full-time degree-seeking undergraduate student

PREFERENTIAL CRITERIA

Preference may be given to students meeting the following guidelines:

  • Expressed interest in the field of psychology
  • Expressed plansin attending graduate school
  • Junior or senior class standing

PROCEDURES

  • A departmental committee will screen applicants and make a recommendation to the Chair of the Department of Psychology. Screening process and selection will be made in the Spring Semester previous to the year of the reward.
  • Applicants will be required to complete a questionnaire documenting their qualifications, accomplishments, and plans relative to the qualifiers and preferential factors listed above.
  • Applicants will submit an essay as outlined on the following page.
  • Applicants will obtain at least one letter of support from those with whom the applicant has had academic affiliation.
  • 50% of the scholarship will be granted at the beginning of the Fall Semester, with the remaining 50% granted for the Spring Semester if satisfactory progress is made.

Alternatively, printed applications may be submitted directly to Dr. Albeck or into his mailbox in the main psychology office (NC 5002) by the deadline. If a printed application is submitted, please include an e-mail address on the application so Dr. Albeck can e mail the author a verification of receipt.

A complete application consists of the following 3 items:

1. the one page Samuel Priest Rose Memorial Scholarship form,

2. the 1,000 word maximum essay addressing the issues listed on the application, and

3. the support letter.

Once the submission is complete, you will receive an e mail message from Dr. Albeck verifying that the application was received and that it is complete. If you do not receive a confirmation, your application may not have been properly received.

The deadline for applications this year will be announced soon (typically, March). Up to three scholarships in the amount of $2400.00 may be awarded this year to competitive and qualified applicants. Late applications will not be considered.
