Facilities
In addition to our chemistry related tools, the Shared Analytical Services Laboratory has several, basic, non-chemistry related shops and expertise available to departments and researchers. These other facilities include:
Experimental Design - The laboratory staff can assist in experimental design. We often work with researchers, who do not have analytical experience, in designing their experiments to make the most efficient use our analytical resources.
Equipment Support - The laboratory staff can assist faculty with installing, maintaining, and repairing many types of laboratory equipment. Frequently, we can also provide training to faculty and students on instrumentation housed in their research groups.
Machine Shop - The laboratory has facilities for basic machining. These include a 5" metal lathe and mill, as well as MIG, TIG, gas, and stick welders. Using this equipment, we routinely repair instrumentation and equipment, or design and create new pieces of equipment to meet the needs of researchers.
Glass Shop - The laboratory has a small glass shop for the making and repairing basic glassware. The glass area is limited to a couple of torches, glass stock, and fixtures for holding work. The shop does not have a glass lathe.
Electronics Shop - The laboratory has the facilities for designing, fabricating, and programming electronic circuits. We have experience designing experimental control and data acquisition systems using the 8031/8051 and PIC microcontrollers.
