Techniques
Disclaimer - These methods and techniques are posted here as a resource for the users of the Shared Analytical Services Laboratory. Most, if not all, of these methods and techniques involve chemicals, processes, or equipment that can be hazardous if not used properly. Do not use these methods or techniques without observing strict safety protocols.
This, and the subsequent pages, contain a series of standard methods and techniques that have been written up for use in the lab. This means that the method or technique has been used in the lab, and for the most part, the equipment and chemicals required for the technique are in stock. Note that the instrumentation may have been configured for another type of analysis, or some of the standards or chemicals may be out of stock or out of date. If the equipment has been reconfigured, it can be set up for the analysis relatively quickly.
Sample Prep Techniques describe the process of acquiring a sample and / or preparing the sample for analysis.
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are the formalized written procedures for operating the instrumentation.
Toxicology Procedures describe the procedures we have used for forensic toxicological analysis.
Analytical Procedures describe the other (non-tox) procedures used in the lab.
Methods and techniques are posted here as we formally right them up. This is not an exhaustive list of the methods and techniques used in the laboratory. If a desired method is not seen here, ask the Laboratory Manager. If you have a need, we are always willing to develop new methods that would increase the capabilities of the lab.
