Using the Laboratory - Particulary Hazardous Procedures

Note - The purpose of the Shared analytical Services Laboratory is to provide a centralized pool of equipment, instrumentation, resources, and expertise for chemical analysis. Policies for laboratory access and use are controlled by the SASL Advisory Committee, and, is limited to users who have received the relevant SASL Safety Briefings. Failure to follow the stated procedures will result in revocation of the users permission to use the laboratory.

Research involving hazardous materials or processes requires a more substantive request and review process. Like other requests, this type of request will allow us to schedule laboratory resources. Unlike the other forms of request, though, a request for a hazardous procedure must include enough information to determine if the proposed research can be safely carried out. The request and its supporting materials will be considered by the Laboratory Advisory Committee, who will decide on the feasibility of the proposed work. The request must be submitted to the Laboratory Manager, in writing, and should include:

- The names and contact information of the researcher, and any students who will be working in the lab.

- The date of the request.

- The title (or a description)July 9, 2007start date, and duration for the use of the lab.

- A description of how payment is to be made for the work.

- A breakdown of the equipment, chemicals, and instrumentation to be used.

- An estimate of the involvement of laboratory personnel. Will laboratory personnel be performing the analysis, providing instruction, helping with experimental design, etc.?

- A detailed description of the hazards involved in the procedure.

- A detailed description of the safety equipment, procedures, and training required for the proposed procedure.

- A copy of the published procedure.

Please address any questions or concerns to the Laboratory Manager.
