As editors, we appreciate the careful and complementary attention the reviewer has given to the book. We indeed hope that it will make a contribution, in the inter-related areas of social inclusion and participation.
There have been a number of subsequent activities that may be of interest to readers:
The Children and Young People"s Participation Learning Network has been formed. This network seeks to stimulate thinking, policy and practice concerning children's and young people's participation. It brings together practitioners, policy-makers, academics and other researchers, as well as children and young people. Last year, a further seminar was held at the University of Edinburgh on Theorising Children's Participation. This intensive seminar brought together UK experts from such disciplines as community development, development studies, social anthropology and politics, with colleagues from Brazil, India and South Africa. A special issue will be published in 2008 by the International Journal of Children"s Rights.
Groups of young people have come together, starting in England and now expanding across the UK, for their own seminar initiative. They have titled the initiative “Don"t Just Tick the Box.” The results of their meetings will shortly be available (links will be made from www.childhoodstudies.ed.ac.uk).
Dr. E. Kay M. Tisdall is Programme Director of the MSc in Childhood Studies, and Reader in Social Policy, at the University of Edinburgh. Previously, she worked as Director of Policy and Research at Children in Scotland, the national umbrella agency for organizations and professionals working with children and their families. Current and recent research includes: pupil councils, training on research methods with children and youth, children"s views in family law proceedings, and inter-agency services. She has recently published journal articles in Children and Society, Critical Social Policy, the European Journal of Social Work, and the International Journal of Law, Policy and the Family.
