DESCRIPTION & PURPOSE

Organizational Purpose and Goals: To inform students about the management and HR professions and develop their knowledge skills and abilities in the fields of Human Resource Management and general management. History: The UC Denver Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) was established in the Spring of 1996. Listed below are highlights of our chapter’s accomplishments since its inception: Recognized as a Top Ten SHRM Chapter Nationwide The UCD SHRM Chapter was recognized as a Top-Ten Merit Award SHRM Student Chapter for the 2001 -2002 and 2002-2003 school year. There are over 400 student chapters of SHRM across the country and our chapter was awarded the highest possible distinction placement as one of the Top Ten student SHRM chapters in the nation. Recipients of the Superior Merit Award The UCD SHRM Chapter was awarded a Superior Merit Award from the National SHRM Office in both the 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 Academic Years. Fewer than 65 universities in the entire country (out of over 390 SHRM student chapters) are honored with this award each year. The annual merit award program recognizes student chapters for outstanding activities and programs in the areas of professional development of student members support of the HR profession and professional operation of the chapter. The University of Colorado Denver is the only school in Colorado that was honored with this award in both the 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 school years. This achievement attests to the motivation and abilities of our members. Champions of the Spring 2001 Colorado HR Collegiate Competition In Spring 2001 the UCD SHRM Chapter participated for the first time in the Colorado HR Collegiate Competition (i.e. HR Games) and won the competition! The Colorado HR Games take place once per year and are organized by SHRM in conjunction with the Colorado Human Resource Association (CHRA). The format is a Jeopardy-style contest in which teams answer questions in various HR categories. All business schools in Colorado are invited to participate. The University of Colorado-Boulder University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and University of Colorado Denver all participated in the games. Our SHRM Chapter won the competition and our student representatives then went on to represent the state of Colorado at the Region VI (Colorado New Mexico Utah Arizona Nevada and California) HR Games. For the 2005-2006 school year and all future years the UC Denver chapter of SHRM is focused on expanding our outreach to all management and HR majors in the undergraduate and graduate programs including health care management.
