Creating Effective Rubrics for Writing

A rubric is a multi-purpose scoring guide for assessing student products and performances. This tool works in a number of different ways to advance student learning, improve teaching, strengthen assessment, and inform program improvement. This presentation will describe key features and basic steps in designing an effective rubric as well as present a variety of examples of rubrics. If time permits, we will review rubrics brought in by workshop participants. The workshop is open to graduate students as well as faculty and instructors.

In this session, participants are invited to bring in their own rubrics for review by the group. However, faculty, instructors and graduate students who do not have their own rubrics are invited to attend as well. At the beginning of the session, key principles of rubric design will be briefly reviewed and several rubric examples will be discussed as well.

A writing prompt assists students in completing all aspects of the given assignment. Prompts serve to advance student learning and strengthen assessment. This presentation will describe key features of designing an effective prompt and present a variety of examples. The workshop is open to graduate students as well as faculty and instructors.
